Access-A-Ride Paratransit Service
Was this information right?
What this program is
Access-A-Ride (AAR), run by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), provides shared paratransit rides across the five boroughs and a three-quarter-mile corridor into neighboring Nassau and Westchester counties. Service operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The full base fare is $3.00, the same as fixed-route subway and local bus fares; applicable discounts may reduce it. A certified Personal Care Attendant rides free. Enrolled riders with the separate Access-A-Ride One Metro New York (OMNY) identification card receive up to four free fixed-route trips a day; these are not free paratransit trips.
Who can get it
A disability must prevent use of buses or subways for some or all trips. An application, interview and functional assessment determine eligibility; a diagnosis or age alone does not establish it.
How to apply
Start by scheduling an eligibility assessment online or by calling 877-337-2017. Enrolled customers book one or two days ahead through MY Access-A-Ride (MY AAR), the official trip-management service, or by phone. Reservations are available seven days a week, 7 a.m.–5 p.m.; same-day trips are not available. Booking information: https://www.mta.info/accessibility/access-a-ride/book-and-manage-trips
