What this program is

New York City Public Schools supports students in shelters, hotels or motels, doubled-up households and other temporary housing. The official school-choice page allows the last school attended or a school available in the current area, subject to seat availability. Transportation can be busing or a Student One Metro New York (OMNY) card, depending on grade and availability. No shelter address is provided by this listing.

Who can get it

Students living at least 0.5 mile from school in kindergarten–grade 6, and grades 7–8 with an Individualized Education Program (IEP), may request busing under the temporary-housing guidance. Students not bused can receive student transit cards. Parents or guardians of children in 3-K–grade 12 who are not bused or are awaiting routing can request a card from the child's school to accompany the child to and from school.

How to apply

Contact the school or shelter staff. Department of Homeless Services (DHS) shelter transportation is arranged with the school system; other temporary-housing requests generally use the Transportation Exception Form through the school. Educational-rights questions: New York State Technical and Education Assistance Center for Homeless Students (NYS-TEACHS), 800-388-2014.
